Travel Company “NORTHWEST” invites you to explore Saint-Petersburg, aptly named the “Venice of the North”, historical and cultural centre of Russia, and one of the most beautiful cities of the world. Peter the Great founded Saint-Petersburg in 1703. Much restoration work has been recently carried out for the 300 th anniversary celebrations. Famous for its palaces, museums and architectural splendour, the city boasts broad avenues, ornate bridges, granite embankments and peaceful picturesque parks.
“Northwest” can arrange a variety of tours for children, students and adults, and organise conferences, conventions, meetings and also visits to concerts, exhibitions and cultural or sporting events.
Accommodation in Saint-Petersburg ranges from one to five stars as in most cities, and “Northwest” can find a hotel to meet your requirements. Our guests are welcomed at the airport and if required can be accompanied to the hotel. They can be advised about or accompanied to restaurants, cafes or coffee houses all selected by us for the high standard of cuisine and hygiene.
City tours are not to be missed in Saint-Petersburg. The unaccompanied visitor can miss so much of the wealth of fascinating places of interest. We make sure that our guests never suffer from that “lost in a big city” feeling which we know can occur at times. We are always there to guide and advise, but we are aware of the need to be unobtrusive when not required.
We have only touched upon some of the attractions available in this city. The fantastic Hermitage, a breathtaking exhibition of art and world culture, is without doubt one of the most prestigious museums. It is the former residence of the imperial family, contains more than 2,5 million exhibits and is a typical example of Russian architectural splendour.
In the bustling, vibrant centre of the city we can arrange boat trips and visits to beautiful churches, palaces, art galleries, and whilst it is difficult to select one of special interests, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ is magnificent and will be immediately recognised from brochures and guidebooks.
At the height of summer the White Nights present almost 24 hours of daylight. The streets are alive with people until the early hours and the raising of the Neva bridges is an exciting and emotional moment. “Northwest” will be delighted to show you the wonders of Saint-Petersburg.
Peterhof, the summer palace of Peter the Great, with its beautiful gardens and spectacular gilded fountains is only a short distance away from the city. Again, a visit is a must together with Catherine’s palace in Pushkin where the Amber room has recently been restored. There are several other suburban palaces to see and for those interested in ancient Russian Orthodox culture a boat trip can be taken to Valaam and Kizhi.
No one can visit Saint-Petersburg without going to the ballet. Of several ballet companies in the city Mariinsky, former Kirov, ballet company is the most famous having performed in all parts of the world.
This year we are arranging special theme excursions some of which will especially appeal to children. We have visits to museums with interesting specialities, for example, Dolls, Chocolate or Circus. For adults there are museums of Vodka, Beer or Bread. The world famous Kunstkammer museum was the first museum open to the public and founded by Peter the Great.
“Northwest” does not limit its scope to history and culture in Saint-Petersburg. A variety of exciting activities is expanding daily in the city. We are always looking for new ideas with which to entertain our guests. For those who like such entertainment we can offer the opportunity to visit the military area in the city suburbs, to drive a tank, fly in a fighter plane or go parachute jumping. Helicopter flights, ballooning and even sumptuous meal on submarine can be arranged. “Northwest” is proud to be able to offer these activities to its clients and thinks that Russia may be unique in this respect.
Sporting activities are not to be ignored in our programme. Leave behind the bustle of the city and take a fishing or shooting trip on the Karelian Isthmus (subject to season). Accommodation can be arranged in cottages or the homes of local hunters. Saunas and famous Russian ‘banya’ are available as is horse riding, sailing or diving in lake Ladoga. Modern pastimes like paint balling and jeep or motorbike off-roading can also be enjoyed.
Back to the city, “Northwest” offers a variety of evening entertainment for those who enjoy some exciting night life (and who doesn’t?) the best in theatres, casinos, night halls or bars is available.
Saint-Petersburg has it all and “Northwest” is waiting to show it to you!
